What is Moxabustion?
Moxabustion is the use o herb Mugwort/Moxa (Ai Ye in Chinese or Artemesia Vulgaris in Latin) for healing purposes. Dried moxa will be burned on (direct) or above the skin (indirect) at acupuncture points. In Australia most acupuncturists do not use direct moxa in order to avoid scarring, but rather will burn the herb indirectly above the skin, like we do at Dr. Li's TCM Clinic. We usually combines moxabustion with acupuncture.
How does Moxabustion work?We mostly use needle moxa , moxa warmers, or moxa may be packed onto a slice of ginger or garlic, in salt or on a piece of aconite. Another indirect method is the use of a moxa stick or roll that looks like a cigar. These are lit and held about an inch above the point or area to be treated. They are usually rotated or turned quickly toward, and then away from the skin. The heat warms and activates the Qi and blood flow for the treatment of disease or health maintenance.
What does Moxabustion feel like?Indirect moxabustion feels warm and very good. You will typically experience a pleasant heating sensation that penetrates deep into the skin, but should not experience any pain.
How many treatments will I need?Treatment plans are based on each patient's individual needs, depth and duration of disease. Our experienced practitioners will give you a prognosis and treatment plan at your first visit. Our goal is to help you feel better as soon as possible.
What are the common conditions Moxabustion is used for?Generally speaking, moxa is used for conditions under the cold and/or stagnant principles in Chinese Medicine. This simply means deficient/weak and/or painful issues. Some examples of deficiency conditions where moxa is helpful are: ~ General immune system strengthening (people who get sick often) ~ Chronic low energy ~ Chronic fatigue ~ Cold hands/feet Some painful conditions where moxa is helpful are: ~ Menstrual cramps ~ Arthritis ~ Muscle pain anywhere in the body There is one other common usage that people are often surprised to hear about and that is its use in the turning of a breeched baby. The acupuncture point, UB 67, when used with moxa will correct a breech presentation over two-thirds of the time with no other interventions.
What are the benefits to Moxabustion?Sometimes Moxabustion is used to warm up a part of your body that is affected by reduced circulation and is cold. If a part of your body is chronically deprived of sufficient blood circulation, the tissues in that area will become malnourished and toxic. The result of this is that injured tissues will not heal and will often lead to chronic pain. Moxa therapy can help with this. A person might have a systemic imbalance that results in long-term illness, such as infertility, fibromyalgia, asthma, irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes, or other "mystery diseases" that have not been effectively treated by Western Medicine. It is possible that regular Moxa and Acupuncture treatments could help with these kinds of conditions. Moxabustion is often useful for conditions that do not respond well to other forms of treatment - serious injuries such as cuts and post-surgical problems, injuries from car accidents, menstrual disorders, thyroid disorders and many others.
